Meet some of our outstanding seniors from the Class of 2016. Read more about their contributions to the University, involvement on and off campus, and in the community.
Joel Torres (Fitchburg, Mass.) had a different path to Pierce than most. He graduated from Montachusett Regional Vocational Technical School in Fitchburg and decided to stay local and attend Fitchburg State University.
“When I attended Fitchburg State, I just felt like another person in the crowd. It made my school experience unenjoyable,” said Torres.
He decided to take a break from the school life to figure things out. He was working full time as a manager at a local UNO’s when a friend he had met at Fitchburg State encouraged him to take a mission trip to Haiti with her.
“We gave kids clothes and books as well as volunteered to help build several orphanages. The kids in Haiti were thriving for an education and that’s when I realized I was taking it all for granted,” said Torres.
Another co-worker of Torres’ recommended checking out Franklin Pierce University because she attended the school. “It almost felt like Franklin Pierce chose me. It was this instant connection with the school and I felt wanted,” said Torres.
While at Pierce, Torres was the women’s volleyball manager, a senior tour guide, senior ambassador in admissions, and a peer leader.
“This school has a unique experience. It really leaves a lasting impression. The atmosphere is amazing and I’ll always call this place home,” he said.
Torres will complete a double major in English and Education this spring, where he hopes to complete his masters following graduation.
