Criteria for Admission

Students may apply to enter in the Fall or Spring sessions. Franklin Pierce evaluates each application holistically, giving consideration to multiple parts of the application packet. We evaluate the following materials in order of importance:

High school coursework:

Applicants are evaluated on an individual basis, with the student's potential and seriousness of purpose of primary concern. The trend toward improved grades, more difficult course work and greater school involvement weigh heavily in the student's behalf. Seniors' grades are evaluated closely and the most recent senior grades must be submitted with a student’s transcript. Each entering student must submit evidence of adequate preparation for college. Sixteen units of secondary school work are required of each candidate, and the preferred distribution is as follows:

Recommended High School Curriculum
English, 4 credits
Mathematics, 3 credits (through Algebra II preferred)
Laboratory Sciences, 2 credits (3 credits preferred)
Social Sciences, 2 credits (3 credits preferred)
Electives, 5 credits

Counselor support and supplementary recommendations are valued and are given special consideration. Students are required to submit one recommendation from a school counselor or academic teacher. A student may submit additional letters of support from those who know the student's academic work. These letters should be provided with the application.

Standardized Test Scores:
Beginning with the Spring 2016 semester, students applying to Franklin Pierce University will have the option to include standardized test scores as part of their application. High school coursework and grades will continue to be the most important factors in FPU’s review process, along with a student’s essay, recommendations, involvement in school and community, and personal qualities and character. However, students who do not think their SAT or ACT scores are an accurate reflection of their academic potential can choose not to submit them.  

Student-athletes may be required to submit SAT or ACT scores to the NCAA Clearinghouse to establish eligibility to play.  All prospective DII student-athletes must submit their SAT or ACT test scores to the Eligibility Center. When submitting test scores to the Eligibility Center, students should use the college code "9999."

Students submitting a secondary application for admission to the Health Sciences to Doctorate in Physical Therapy Pathway Program will be required to submit SAT or ACT scores as part of that application for
program admission.  If you are submitting scores for the Health Sciences to Doctorate in Physical Therapy Program, Franklin Pierce University will consider your highest section scores across all SAT test dates that you submit. Only your highest section scores will be considered as part of the final admissions decision.

For students submitting test scores, we request that official test scores be sent directly from SAT (code 3395) or ACT (code 2509). 

Writing Sample:
In addition to the required writing portion of the SAT or ACT, we also require a polished writing sample to evaluate a student’s writing ability. Students may choose from a question listed on the application or submit a graded writing sample from a recent academic class. The essay gives students the opportunity to both demonstrate their writing aptitude and to share with Franklin Pierce a little more about themselves are what they have to offer.

Potential for Success:
Franklin Pierce admits those secondary school graduates who have a sincere desire for higher education, have demonstrated ability to acquire this education, and have evidenced good citizenship. Students can demonstrate these abilities through elective course work, school athletics, extra curricular activities, community involvement and volunteer service.

General Information:
Admission is open to all qualified applicants without regard to race, religion, physical disability, or ethnic origin. Applications are processed on a rolling basis; there is no application deadline. Candidates considered for admission to Franklin Pierce University ordinarily must be graduates of an accredited secondary school unless qualified for early admission. Franklin Pierce University supports the efforts of secondary school officials and governing bodies to have their schools achieve regional accredited status to provide reliable assurance of the quality of the educational preparation of its applicants for admission. Candidates deemed to have potential and motivation, yet not meeting all admission requirements, may be accepted provisionally.

Application Process


Procedures for Admission:
We review applications for students to commence their studies in either the Fall or Spring semester. Applicants are considered on a rolling basis until the class is filled. While there is no specific deadline, students are encouraged to apply and have their transcripts and recommendations sent early in the senior year. While an application should be filed during the student’s senior year in high school, later applications will be considered if space is available. Students may enter in the Fall, Spring, or Summer.

The application consists of the following documents and information:

  1. The completed application form
  2. Official secondary school transcript
  3. Official transcript from each college attended
  4. Official secondary school recommendation
  5. SAT or ACT test scores optional
  6. A sample of the student’s writing or an essay


An on-campus interview is recommended.
Foreign students must submit certification of Finances and an acceptable TOEFL score.

Guidance Counselor Summer Visits


NHCUC Bus Tour
Franklin Pierce University is part of the New Hampshire College and University (NHCUC) Guidance Counselor Bus Tour Program. Each year, the admissions directors of the consortium schools offer a weeklong tour program for high school guidance counselors to learn more about the academic offerings, campus atmosphere, campus life, and the admissions requirements of each college. The tour is also available to a limited number of college transfer counselors and independent counselors. There is no cost to the counselor or the high school to participate in this program, other than travel expenses to and from the host hotel. Lodging, tour transportation and meals are all provided.

Because you will return to the same hotel each evening, you can unpack when you arrive and relax for the rest of the week. You will travel by coach bus to each of the colleges and get a feel for each campus and the surrounding geographical area. You will also hear from admissions officers, students and faculty, and have an opportunity to ask many questions. An added benefit is the chance to interact with your colleagues and the discuss the issues facing college admissions and college counseling today. Learn more and register for the NHCUC Bus Tour.
