Pitou was the first American to win an Olympic medal in downhill skiing; Astmann is an entrepreneur and chairman of the University's board of trustees. The four Honorees each received a Doctor of Humane Letters. In addition, Paul Holloway was awarded the Honorable Walter R. Peterson Citizen Leader Award for his lifelong commitment to civic engagement and philanthropy. The University's insurance company has completed its assessment of the damage and has determined that The Bubble will be replaced with a brand new fabric "shell." Due to the complexities of manufacturing a new shell, removing the old one, inspection of the flooring and equipment contained within, and the possibility of needing to replace the floor, the University expects full use of The Bubble by early summer; costs will be covered by the institution's insurance policy. He directed the music video for the song "Coming Down" by rising artist Anais Mitchell. Filmed in Sansone's childhood home, Mitchell plays her guitar alone while watching the director's old family videos." Sansone, who earned his degree in mass communications to develop skills that have served as a foundation for his career, was joined by Chris Potter ('09?) as the video's assistant director. Sansone says the video represents "three months of writing, shooting, and editing," and adds that collaborating with Anais Mitchell on the project was a pleasure. Dr. Bunders brings more than 18 years experience in higher education administration to this position. Most recently, she held the position of Vice President for Enrollment Management and Athletics at Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa where she was responsible for all recruiting efforts. Champagne is a dual Anthropology and Biology major and her internship as a Primate Zookeeper provided knowledge beyond the classroom in those two areas. During the internship, Champagne gained experience in a zoo environment through feeding and interacting with the animals, as well as cleaning their living areas. "I went in with the fear that I was going to be treated like an intern but they treated me like I was a zookeeper," said Champagne. "Everything they did, I did and through that I feel like I got a lot more experience than I thought I was going to." At the beginning of the internship, Champagne was following what the zookeepers told her to do. By the end of the summer, she knew what the needs of the individual animals were. Part of her work at the zoo also included behavioral observation on some of the animals. For her future, she knows she wants to work with primates but she is not sure where. "I know a door will eventually open up somewhere in this field but it's such a specialized field that I can't really say where that door will be," said Champagne. As for her experience at Franklin Pierce University she says, "With the help of my advisors (Professors Goodby and Veilleux), avenues in my life originally thought unattainable are now within my grasp. Thistle had worked on his study "Rotary Clubs: What's Altruism Got to Do with it?" since January 2011. He would like to thank the Jaffrey-Rindge Rotary Club as well as the Swampscott Rotary Club for their help and support throughout his research. Editors John R. Harris, Executive Director of Franklin Pierce University's Monadnock Institute, Kay Morgan and Mike Dickerman were on hand to receive the award on behalf of all the contributors to the book. The award was presented by NH Writers' Project Vice President, Mary Jo Alibrio, whose remarks included some of the comments made by the judge in nonfiction, Art Winslow, former literary editor and executive editor of The Nation and frequent contributor to the Los Angeles Times and Chicago Tribune Book Forum. About Beyond the Notches, Winslow wrote: "the symbiotic relationship between the land and its people is the great throbbing heart of Beyond the Notches, rendered close and dear on virtually every page, and without shyness or rancor it engages difficult questions with open-ended answers." Designed as a project to collect and celebrate essays "with dirt under their fingernails" by North Country writers, Beyond the Notches "manages to wed together historicism and contemporary affairs relatively seamlessly, in a continuum of consideration that balances questions of stewardship, economic necessity and communal responsibility," according to Winslow. After serving as Governor of New Hampshire from 1969 to 1973, Walter served as President of Franklin Pierce University for twenty years. On our Rindge campus there are few areas that were not touched by and greatly influenced by the determination and commitment of Walter's vision. He was a humble, gracious, kind, warm and enormously generous friend to all who were blessed to know him. Walter will be fondly remembered as the President who knew every student's name and helped establish the close family community that is still a hallmark of Franklin Pierce. I have always admired and respected him as a strong advocate for higher education, a staunch supporter of Franklin Pierce University, and personally as an advisor and confidant. The University recently presented the first Walter R. Peterson Citizen Leader award to Sen. Lou D'Allesandro during our commencement ceremony to acknowledge and honor an individual for his or her extraordinary commitment to public service, selfless contributions to higher education, sense of humor and high moral character--all characteristics of the award's namesake. In the coming days and weeks we will all be inspired by the stories of Walter Peterson's life narrative and the lessons we can all take away from this statesman's bountiful love of New Hampshire, the people of the Granite State, and the higher education system he so vigorously built and supported. A life well lived, the respect of his peers, the love of his family and constituents, the admiration of a grateful state, what a remarkable legacy for this true gentleman. A total of 589 students will participate, with 51 students receiving doctoral degrees, 125 students receiving master's degrees, 390 students receiving bachelor's degrees and 23 students earning associate degrees. The ceremonies will include the presentation of two honorary degrees. New Hampshire authors Howard Mansfield and Sy Montgomery will receive a Doctor of Humane Letters at this year's commencement. Mansfield has written, edited and contributed to over a dozen books about history, preservation and architecture. He writes of the importance of preserving old ways of doing things to "import some of the things we are losing daily: silence, repose, memory," and "make time for being here - not online, not rushing to do everything." He writes about time and place in his recent book, Turn and Jump: How Time and Place Fell Apart. Mansfield is the editor of the Franklin Pierce University's Monadnock Institute of Nature, Place and Culture's anthology of essays Where the Mountains Stands Alone: Stories of Place in the Monadnock Region published by University Press of New England. He worked closely with Professor John Harris for six years to bring the volume to fruition, and contributing author Ernest Hebert called Mansfield "the best editor he has had the pleasure to work with." Mansfield has also been a founding member of the Monadnock Institute's advisory board since 1996. He is on the Exhibitions and Publications Committee of the New Hampshire Historical Society, the Village Planning Committee for the Town of Hancock, N.H. and chair of the local Library Trustees. He graduated from Syracuse University with a dual degree in Magazine Journalism and Honors in American Studies, and was awarded the Chancellor's Citation for Exceptional Academic Achievement. Naturalist, scientist and animal champion, Montgomery worked as a newspaper writer covering science, medicine and the environment before moving to the Australian Outback and branching out to books, magazine articles, radio and film in New Hampshire. This award-winning author has written 15 books for both adults and children including the international bestseller, The Good Good Pig. An ardent conservationist and animal advocate, she is concerned with the health of our planet and all species but still optimistic. "I believe that like the many brave people who fought for women's rights and civil rights, those of us working to protect the environment and honor the lives of creatures other than just humans, are going to change the world," says Montgomery. The four medical doctors who host the program--which provides frank discussions on common and emerging health topics--had selected the students' video public service announcement from among five submissions sent in from Franklin Pierce student film makers. The 30-second PSA will air on the show on May 5 on WHDH Channel 7, Boston, Mass. at 2 p.m. and will be archived on the program's Web site, along with three of the other submissions, for viewing online at www.thedoctorstv.com. Franklin Pierce will also host a special viewing for the Franklin Pierce community at 2 p.m. in Pierce Hall. Erica Tomaszewski served as producer, Alex Terrill directed the PSA, Zachary Bylaska-Davies was the cameramen and Logan Mack edited the short film, titled "I Care," which explores the importance of supporting each other in a positive way. The team had originally focused on suicide prevention, but after further developing their script, decided that it was more important to explore the theme by focusing on how precious life is. "Our group really wanted our PSA to strike a chord with people who are busy with the day-to-day and may not know how much they mean to others," said Tomaszewski. "It's about understanding the potential impact of showing someone who is in a tough situation in life that you care," said Terrill. Professor Heather Tullio in the mass communications department played a key role in this project along with faculty from other disciplines: biology professors Susan Arruda and Thomas Bennett, theatre professor Nancy Stone, sociology professor Doug Challenger and mass communication professors Andrea Bergstrom, Paul Bush and Kristen Nevious. The opportunity to submit student-created PSAs to The Doctors was developed by the show's executive producer, Andrew Scher, a 1988 graduate of Franklin Pierce who now lives in Los Angeles. Scher challenged Franklin Pierce students from all majors to create an outstanding 30-second public service announcement on a health issue. Scher says he believes his experience producing short films as a student led to his success in Hollywood. He wants today's Franklin Pierce students to have a similar experience. "When we met with Andrew Scher he mentioned that one of the defining moments of his Pierce education was when he was able to produce a short film," says Franklin Pierce President James Birge. "He began to talk about that opportunity being available to current students and wondered how he could use his success as an executive producer to help make this happen. As the conversation went on, he arrived at the idea of hosting a competition among students to produce a PSA on health issues and he would have The Doctors judge the productions." Filming took place during the winter break over an eight-day period, using students, staff and local residents as actors. All projects were filmed, edited and the completed PSAs were shipped off to Los Angeles in February to The Doctors for review. The response was overwhelmingly positive. "The PSAs produced by all the teams were outstanding," said Scher. "I was genuinely impressed with the quality of all five submissions." Professor Tullio observed: "It great to see how much effort the production teams put into the PSAs, and how much they learned through that process. Bartlett will receive the award in the 8th annual presentation to honor individuals who have made significant contributions to public discourse in the spirit of a healthy democracy. After being elected president in 1852, he gave the unique desk to a family friend, Charles Norton, who lived near his law office. The desk changed hands over the years, as a series of owners moved it to Massachusetts and Rhode Island. This month, the desk from which the 14th U.S. President launched his early political career has made it back home to New Hampshire, donated to the university that bears the name of the only U.S. President from that state. Franklin Pierce University in Rindge, N.H., has received the desk as a gift from an alumnus who located the well-preserved secretariat tiger maple desk in an antique auction in Rhode Island in 2010. Paul Rotondo, a Norwalk, Conn., entrepreneur and business consultant who attended then-Franklin Pierce College in the 1980s and his friend and colleague Janet Mastrondari won the stunning piece at auction. The Empire-style desk came with a documented provenance--which includes correspondences, newspaper articles, letters of authentication and other documentation confirming the desk's authenticity. "Attorney Janet Mastronardi, who specializes in antiques, called to let me know about the desk," he says. She recalled that Rotondo had gone to Franklin Pierce and thought that he would be interested in the piece. "Being a beautiful unique piece that once belonged to our 14th President and was made locally in New Hampshire and was being sold with documentation authenticating its ownership," he says his interest was piqued. "It was not only in great condition, but also included documentation that traced its prior ownership to President Pierce when he worked as an attorney." The collection of documents reveals much about the desk's ownership; it was used in the office of a New Hampshire harness maker for many years, was later owned by a Leominster, Mass. family, and ultimately made its way south to Cranston, R.I., during the early 20th Century. While the documents describe the desk as a local piece, built in the Concord area in the early 1830s, the identity of its builder remains a mystery. "What stands out about this piece is the quality of wood chosen for its construction," notes Rotondo, who also consults in antique appraisal. "Typically, the furniture makers in those days would reserve the more ornate woods for special customers," he said, "and the quality of the large amount of tiger maple selected for this particular desk shows that [Franklin Pierce] was a customer whom they valued highly." The wood selection of the desk is noted in an Aug. 22, 1971 newspaper column in The Providence Sunday Journal, which states that the large tiger and curly maple pieces used to make the desk "would probably be unobtainable today, and even when this desk was made had to be selected from the log and then painstakingly sliced out." The desk has found a home in the president's office on campus at Franklin Pierce University, a private university founded in 1962, where it closely matches the design of the room. "It is already proving to be a great conversation piece," says Dr. James F. Birge, the university's president, "and we are very happy to have received it as a donation." Dr. Birge notes that Paul Rotondo was a history major during his student days. "We are thankful for his life-long appreciation of history and grateful that he helped return this unique piece to Franklin Pierce." In the months ahead, he says, the desk will be moved to other parts of campus from time to time, including the lobby of Peterson Hall and perhaps eventually the university library. Franklin Pierce University this week received a $536,640 grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to help fund the university's new Master of Physician Assistant Studies Program--a program established in November of 2009 with the explicit goal of serving the rural and underserved communities of Vermont and central and northern New Hampshire. According to Lisa Southwick, director of the Master in Physician Assistant Studies (M.P.A.S.) Program at Franklin Pierce University, the new program's location at the university's West Lebanon, N.H. Graduate & Professional Studies center, is critical to the mission of the program. "With no physician assistant program in Vermont and the only New Hampshire PA program being in the southern tier of the state, the location of this program in the west central region of New Hampshire and only seven miles from the Vermont border makes it ideally situated to meet these needs," she said. "Through student-volunteer initiatives, community engagement, rural elementary education programs and other projects, Franklin Pierce University enjoys a deep tradition of serving rural communities in New England," said Dr. James Birge, President of Franklin Pierce. "We are committed to helping those residents in rural areas of New Hampshire and Vermont gain better access to medical care, and I applaud the directors of this program in their successful work to secure support for this important initiative." The new program's first cohort of 23 students includes 11 Vermonters and six students with ties to New Hampshire. "This will be accomplished through offering travel stipends for students training in these rural settings," says Southwick, "and by providing training for clinical preceptors, and hiring a new half-time faculty member whose primary function will be to recruit and support clinical preceptors in the rural regions of New Hampshire and Vermont." Projections in demographic shifts by the U. S. Census Bureau reveal a significant increase in elderly populations in the years ahead. The burden of disability is likely to increase as our population grows older. "In addition to increasing opportunities for students to engage with preceptors and patients in rural and underserved communities, this project will address health disparities experienced by patients with disabilities through improving the knowledge, skills and attitudes of physician assistant students and their preceptors in providing accessible care for patient with disabilities," says Southwick. Bush, President of the United States, in the two years between the fall of the Berlin wall on Nov. 9. 1989 and the dissolution of the Soviet Empire on Dec. 24, 1991. Marlin Fitzwater, of Franklin Pierce University, was Press Secretary to President Bush during this period and attended all of the meetings depicted in the exhibit, which will open to the public on Tuesday, July 27th from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the Marlin Fitzwater Center for Communication on the Franklin Pierce University Rindge campus. Mr. Fitzwater will attend the opening event and will be available for interviews. Marlin Fitzwater was White House Press Secretary for six years under presidents Ronald Reagan and George H. W. Bush, making him one of the longest-serving press secretaries in history. He was born on a farm in Salina, Kansas, graduated from Kansas State University in 1965 with a degree in journalism, and served in the United States Air Force. Fitzwater worked as a reporter, then served at various Federal agencies, including the U.S. Department of Transportation and the Environmental Protection Agency and served as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Public affairs at the Department of the Treasury from 1981 to 1982. Fitzwater joined the White House in 1983, where he served until 1989. The Marlin Fitzwater Center for Communication at Franklin Pierce University was established in 2002 as an academic institute dedicated to preparing young men and women to be politically-engaged Leaders of Conscience in their studies and professions. The Fitzwater Center was named for its primary benefactor, Marlin Fitzwater, who stands alone as the only White House press secretary to have been appointed by two presidents (Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush). Fitzwater also serves on the University's Board of Trustees. Since its founding, the Fitzwater Center has gained a national reputation for the caliber of student journalists who hone their skills through its hands-on learning and mentoring programs. This documentarian is serious. This was not just a class project for credit. This is her passion. A native of Shrewsbury, Mass., she knew back in high school that she wanted to be in video production. "I spent so many afternoons working with my father on projects for our local public access station and that is where I truly fell in love with media," says Waye. "I knew that I wanted a school with media production, that I wanted to stay in New England and that I wanted to go to a smaller school. Franklin Pierce was the perfect fit." She started in right away as an active member of FPTV (Franklin Pierce Television) within her first weeks on campus and has been involved ever since. "From a teacher's point of view, Natalya is the ideal student -- eager to learn, enthusiastic for the work we do, strongly principled, an excellent speaker, and an attentive listener. It's been a privilege to work with her," says Professor Richard Roth. Waye just graduated from Franklin Pierce with a major in Mass Communications and a dual concentration in Media Production and Media Studies and has already left her mark both on Pierce and on the real world. Her recent documentary, "Art for Water," has not only hit the Internet on YouTube but she was also recently invited to premiere the film at the Hynes Convention Center in Boston as part of their Down:2: Earth Sustainable Living Expo. So what is this documentary which has captured the passions of such an enthusiastic young women about? She says, "It's about how a small university in New Hampshire, Franklin Pierce University, came together as an institution to work towards one common goal. This goal being to create awareness about the water crisis by using multiple disciplines in the school such as dance, film, business, sciences, etc. During the process of creating awareness throughout the university, it spread through the campus, to the surrounding community and is continuing to grow today." She tells this story through interviews with both faculty and students. "Well I knew going into my senior year that I wanted to do a documentary, but I wasn't sure what I was going to do," says Waye. "Joni Doherty (professor) and Christine Destrempes, the artist in residence, came into our Advanced Media Production Class, taught by Dr. Richard Roth. They wanted a student to document the process of Art for Water. This program works to have a community or school come together with a common goal of creating awareness about topics related to environment. It was such an exciting program. The thing that I enjoyed most was seeing the process of the Art for Water and my documentary both coming together." She credits the close relationships she has made on campus; something that she says is unique to Franklin Pierce, with helping her to become who she is today. "The sense of community and individuality that is created here is what I value most," says Waye. "They encourage you to be yourself. It is really my family." While at Pierce, she completed two internships, one at the public access station in her hometown and the other at Yankee Publishing in Dublin, N.H. "Both of these internships gave me such amazing field experience," she says. "I wasn't just running and getting coffee, I was working hands on with editing, preproduction, etc." She has definitely found her passion and credits her experience at Pierce with helping to make that happen.
